sis in clean water. One out of every five people in the world lacks access to safe drinking water. An estimated 500 million people in the world are at risk of drinking arsenic contaminated water. Some 1.8 million children die each year as a result of diarrhea.  About half of all people in developing countries suffer at any given time from a health problem caused by water borne diseases. The lack of clean water affects millions of people, with illness and lost educational opportunities in childhood leading to poverty in adulthood. But a sustainable solution to obtain clean drinking water for majority of the population in the world is still elusive. The solution lies in the application of appropriate science and technology and dissemination through education.

The Center for Clean Water and Sustainable Technologies (CCWST) is based on the theme that there is a global crisis in clean water for sustainability. The primary goal of the center is to find ways to obtain clean water through a process of measurement, characterization, and mitigation method developments. In addition, the center will have an education component to train future scientists and a public outreach effort through professional and public media. The center is seeking active collaborations with local and international academia and industry. It is the purpose of CCWST to gather expertise within the department, the university, and from external organizations to strengthen collaborative research in solving this outstanding problem of humanity.
